Can you do more app dissections? Love those

I have a few in mind, just haven't quite found the time or motivation. Thanks for the +1 though!

What’s your favorite video game? And what are you playing these days?

Overwatch mostly these days. I'm hard-stuck Gold, a filthy casual, but it's a ton of fun. I've been working on deliberate practice and trying to climb, it's a good challenge.

What do u think of having hamburger menu buttons in iOS apps. I've noticed this happening a few iOS apps and cant wrap my head around this. Is there a right way to do this ?

You can use one, but just know ahead of time that few-to-no people will ever tap on it. Tab bars are the preferred tool for primary navigation. A hamburger menu for "navigation overflow" is just less obvious. It's a hard problem.

What is something not many people know about you?

I have a fairly addictive personality, and I’m constantly battling it. That can manifest itself in productive ways - like building side projects or learning some new skill - but also it can really be ugly when I go on multi-day video game and TV binges. I’m still trying to figure this one out, but I suppose many of my friends might not realize this.

Curious on the recent change to call out visited links on your site (purple). Was it for accessibility?

More or less, yes. I actually had one person anonymously email me - angrily, I’d note - that they were frustrated not knowing where they’d left off on my Product Design Portfolios post. I’m not sure purple is the right color, but I’m gonna sit on it for a while.

Do you have any advice for new grads?

I'm working on a longer answer to this, but for now:

  • Make things. Solve your own problems. It's okay if the early versions suck.
  • Make more things. See if you can solve someone else's problem. It's still okay if things suck. If you know they suck, even better: you're self aware, and can recognize that you have room to grow.
  • Take the things you made for yourself and for others, and make them a bit better.
  • Confirm that you made things better by talking to people and sharing your ideas with anyone who will listen.
  • Write about the things you made and what you learned by making them.
  • Reach out to people you want help from with specific questions. If they give you advice, follow up – even if you decided not to take the advice.

How do you manage to get so much done?

I don't, it just looks like that from the outside. I played more video games this week than you'd like to know 🙃

Favourite music to listen to when you’re deep into UI work?

Anything I've heard 1,000,000 times before and the lyrics won't distract me. For example, An Awesome Wave by alt-J is burned into my brain and is a perfect backdrop to getting work done. I've also listened to this mix hundreds of times. There is a 4-6 minute section at the 1:16:00 mark that I hate, but otherwise this mix is incredible.

You should write more financial-related articles like the investment one!

Thanks, I'll think on it! If you see this again – what other financial topics are you curious about? I'll see if I know anything about the topic :)

Is there any sort of validation to how many times I like a question?

No. Please don't spam it too much 🙏

Edit: nice.

What are the biggest challenges in finding better clients and increasing your rate as a freelancer?

The last time I freelanced was in high school, so I'm afraid to say I knew nothing then, and I know nothing now. This article might help.

This is awesome! Are you having fun?

Thanks! Yeah, it's a lot of fun. Very much treating this as a playground to learn new things – so far I've learned a lot about client/server side performance optimizations and dug into the latest GraphQL tooling (codegen, latest version of Apollo).
